This month’s CKAN Monthly Live highlighted the Hale & Hearty project: Creating a Knowledge Base to improve the health and wellbeing of people living in Ireland. Hale & Hearty provide a comprehensive Health & Wellbeing knowledge base, available as Open Data on the National Open Data Portal data.gov.ie, which can be used for rich analysis, insights and action. This involves the harmonisation and linking of data from many sources, including Local Authorities, the Central Statistics Office, and Healthcare Providers. The project provides health and wellbeing related information, open data and a health and wellbeing app.

We heard Aishling Hyland, Katharine Cooney and Mario Romera speak about:

  1. The Why: Vision, objectives and overview of the project
  2. The How, Part 1: Data – Getting the data, categorisation, harmonisation, etc
  3. The How, Part 2: Dev side – Changing CKAN Core for advanced search functionality and improved visualisation

We learned about the visualisation and advanced search functionalities (including both geo and non-geo) developed to deliver a user-friendly experience, facilitating access to information - with the goal of making open health and wellbeing data more accessible and useful.

About the project

Hale & Hearty is a project led by the Irish Government Department of Public Expenditure and Reform (DPER) and supported by the EU Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The outcome of the project is a CKAN based knowledge base - The Hale and Hearty Knowledge Base, which aims to make health and wellbeing information more easily accessible to the public - to use this information to improve their own health and wellbeing and to see it in the context of their personal health information and activities. The project supports the deployment of new innovative services by providing up-to-date API access to health and wellbeing data from a number of key Irish sources.  These includes the CSO demographic and mobility data, Local Government data, OSi data on the location of sports and amenity facilities, NTA data and health research data. Advanced search functionalities including both geo and non-geo data have been designed to deliver a user-friendly experience within the knowledge base, facilitating access to information with the view to deliver against the targeted outcome to improve sport related activities.

Hale & Hearty is funded by the European Commission’s Innovation and Networks Executive Agency, under the 2019 Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Telecom Call - Public Open Data (CEF-TC-2019-2). The programme partners are: Central Statistics Office, Dept. of Health, Fingal County Council, Derilinx and Ireland’s Data Cloud Cluster (IDCC).
